Preview: Lectures, Live Music and More @ the Modern Living Expo and Prefab Showcase


This year, your $10 ticket at the door buys you entrance into a whole world of modernist fun at the Prefab Showcase and Modern Living Expo.  Here’s a quick rundown of some of the programming that’s in store!


Bigger, better, and brighter than it was last year, the Modern Living Expo will feature a special stage inside the big tent where exhibitors and experts from contemporary brands will be on hand to talk about their design and more.  Among the highlights on the Modern Living Expo stage:

  • The Modern Mindset: Purists of the Past and the New Futurists with California Home and Design‘s Erin Feher.  Special guest panelists architect Barbara Bestor, artist Danny Heller, preservationist and activist Chris Menrad, and iconic Trina Turk. [Saturday, February 23 @ 11am to 12noon.  Buy tickets here.]
  • Altius Architecture on the miniHome.  The behind-the-scenes look at how the miniHome is built.  [Multiple sessions throughout the week.]
  • Reuel Young. Interactive Design Group. On sustainability from the perspective of “fit.” [Saturday, February 23 @ 1pm]
  • Eric Corey Freed.  The founder of OrganicArchitect and the head of the USGBC Coachella Valley Branch on sustainability in the desert. [Saturday, February 23 @ 2:30pm]


And like the title suggests, we have some vibrant programming in store for visitors at the Prefab Showcase as well.  Don’t miss the Hot Purple Energystage smack dab in the middle of the pop-up prefab village.  Highlights include:

  • Hot Purple Energy All Star Band.  A band powered by Hot Purple Energy’s “Solarator” and made up of staff and local musicians will rock the stage throughout the day. [Saturday and Sunday, February 16 and February 17, various time throughout the day between 10am and 4pm]
  • Sustainability Award and Lecture.  Hot Purple Energy present a Sustainability Award to the most sustainable prefabricated home and host a lecture on Modernism: Past, Present, and Future. [Friday, February 16 @1pm]
  • Hot Purple Energy Bike Tour. A leisurely bike tour through Palm Springs highlighting modern architecture that happens to use Hot Purple Energy systems, proving that solar panels don’t need to interfere with aesthetics.  Food, drinks and entertainment to follow. [Saturday, February 23 @10:30am]
