Sunnylands Tours – Designed by A. Quincy Jones in the mid 60s for Walter and Leonore Annenberg, Sunnylands is arguably one of the only purely modernist estates in the United States. Many key figures of the 20th century enjoyed relaxing as guests at Sunnylands. The list includes seven U.S. presidents, the British royal family, and Hollywood icons like Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Ginger Rogers, and many others.

I have tried a couple of times to buy tickets but they always sell out so fast. Having been to the visitor center at Sunnylands and loved it, I am dying to see the house.

In 1995 I had a chance to buy a pair of Eames fiberglass chairs with chrome Eiffel tower bases. I scoffed that the seller wouldn’t budge on their price of $150. That was for the pair! I walked in protest thinking I’ll try and low ball him again next week. Of course they were gone.

Even though I’m embarrassed to share this with follow mid-century modern enthusiasts I wanted to make two points. One, I’ve loved this period of design before Dwell Magazine and Madmen. The other is I recently moved to Southern California and missed out on tickets to Modernism Week. I felt like I relived my poor decision not to buy those chairs but you just gave me a second chance!

Being a Canadian, I can’t wait to see all of our American Friends and to thaw out!!

I am very interested in seeing some of the pre-fab buildings during Moderism week. We environmentally conscience people would like some options for vacation structures that respect our natural environment.
I am also very interested in seeing the Annenberg Estate
since I have been unable to get tickets but have seen the
gardens and grounds and have been very impressed.

  7. I like what you guys are usually up too. This kind of clever work and reporting! Keep up the superb works guys I’ve you guys to blogroll.|

This estate was recommended by a friend who lives here in the desert. We would love to be able to enjoy its beauty during our visit.

Visiting from Seattle–what better way to experience mid-century modernism than to tour Sunnylands! Until we hear back from you, we’ll be rocking out at the Expo and Prefab Show, keeping our fingers crossed for these tickets. Many thanks to Brad Kuhns–how generous of him!

  10. Colleen says:

Would love to see the beautiful home and gardens. Tickets went quickly and we missed out. Thanks for a second chance.

This will be my first time to Palm Springs, and what better way to celebrate than tie our trip into Modernism Week, so that in itsel is exciting. However, the real joy for me to is to be able to share my excitement and enthusiasm with my DH… this is a man who has never really expressed any interest in aesthetics or anything in regards to my design degree. So for him to not only be open to coming along with me, but to actually have been the one to suggest the last-minute trip is absolutely heart-warming. Can’t wait to take it all in!
