For others, it’s a philosophy that can be applied to pieces and places both old and new—an aesthetic that continues to evolve and push the boundaries of what came before.  Continue reading

The Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Modernism Week 2013

TheGuide_LogoModernism Week features eleven days and ten nights of cocktail parties, exhibitions, lectures, films, expos, home tours, and much more.  In other words, there is a lot to see.  Lest our guests get lost at this veritable Woodstock-in-the-Desert for fans of modernist design, we’ve created The Guide, a handy dandy outline of events with links to where to buy tickets.

Basically, The Guide is meant to help guests who have already purchased tickets figure out what else they might want to see while in Palm Springs, and give guests without tickets a chance to see what they still have time to sign up for!  While many of the popular events have already sold out, there are tons of lectures, design showcases and expos, and gallery receptions that have available spots.

Modernism Week Home Tour OneWe’ll continue to update The Guide as new events are added.  Look for an updated round-up of cocktail parties in the coming weeks.

Lecture Highlight: Hagy Belzberg, FAIA

Santa Monica architect, Hagy Belzberg of Belzberg Architects, is all about architectural innovation – and his recently completed, award-winning projects illustrate this beautifully. His tendency toward molded and sculptural forms defines his approach. This is evidenced from the triangular shapes of the award-winning Conga Room, to the relationship of the Los Angeles Holocaust Museum to its adjacent park which envelopes the structure. Join Belzberg as he discusses his design strategies for creating architecturally innovative projects in his lecture, Desert Installations, Salsa Dancing and the Architecture of Tragedy  at Palm Springs Modernism Week. Design is a collaborative process between client and architect, and Belzberg will illustrate his lecture with recent projects of his Santa Monica firm.
