Prefab Preview: miniHome by Altius Architecture

Sustain MiniHome

Few homes leave a physical and carbon footprint as small as the miniHome by Altius Architecture – and this week, Palm Springs Modernism Week guests can tour the energy efficient, modern prefab home during the exciting new Prefab Showcase.

Designed by Altius Architecture and built by HMK Prefab Homes, the miniHome represents the best in modern design and energy efficiency. Design details – such as a structural steel chassis and floor assembly, green materials, reflective thermal barrier, cedar siding, energy efficient windows and cork flooring – have resulted in a reduced environmental footprint, as well as lowered operational and maintenance costs. Like its name, the urban dwelling is a lean, green, eco-friendly machine, incorporating a surprising amount of sustainable technology into a compact (and comfortably livable) space. “To you, it’s the world. To us, it’s home.”

For former Pan Am flight attendants like actor Phillip Keene (The Closer, Major Crimes), the collapse of the international airline was a sudden and devastating loss.

“It was December 4, 1991,” Keene recalls. “I woke up that morning and learned that I didn’t have a job anymore.” Continue reading

Preview: California Home and Design Explores “The Modern Mindset”

Erin Feher

Not everyone agrees on the meaning of the word “modernism.” For some, it’s a strict adherence to the design style of the 1950s and ’60s. For others, it’s a philosophy that can be applied to pieces and places both old and new—an aesthetic that continues to evolve and push the boundaries of what came before.  Continue reading

MODERNISMPROJECT FASHION CHALLENGE WINNER: Matthew Reader

Thank you to everyone who participated in our last #ModernismProject photo challenge –#fashion. It was a pleasure to have Brenna Egan with Refinery 29 look through all of your submissions, so thank you for being our special guest judge! Brenna chose Matthew Reader’s winning self portrait (@mrmodps). “Matthew clearly had a blast with this challenge, and I’m still smiling ear-to-ear over this winning shot! Matthew, may I borrow your Pucci shirt? It plays so well with the Bertoia sculpture — this was a perfectly art-directed snap. Bravo!” says Egan. Follow Matthew on Instagram (@mrmodps) to see more of his modernist inspired instashots!

While we’re sad the #ModernismProject challenge is now over, we want to give a HUGE thank you to all those participants who submitted hundres and hundreds of photos for each challenge. We thoroughly enjoyed pouring over each and every photo, as have our judges.

But wait – this doesn’t mean the challenges are over.

We’ve flipped tables a bit and now ask YOU to be the judges for the Palm Springs ModSquad (#PSModSquad)! This group is a hand-picked “squad” of a few of our favorite influential design bloggers, Instagrammers, and Tweeps. They’ll be our roving eyes, snapping shots of the best moments, most interesting people, most exquisite pieces, and best outfits at Palm Springs Modernism Week –  giving us all a wider view of the eleven-day modernist extravaganza. Be sure to follow them all on Instagram and like their photos. The photo with the most likes at the end of the first weekend will receive a special prize from Just Modern.

#MODERNISMPROJECT > CHALLENGE NO. 6 > FASHION > SPECIAL GUEST JUDGE BRENNA EGAN | REFINERY 29

With Palm Springs Modernism Week commencing in a little over three weeks, here’s your last chance to win tickets! Our prize this week is a pair of tickets to the Silver Factory Gala on February 15th (a value of $250). Come and celebrate Andy Warhol’s notorious studio, where decadence and impropriety reigned supreme. For those of you who are new around here, the #ModernismProject is our first-ever mobile initiative encouraging the global community of modernism fans to express visually what modernism means to them. This week’s theme is…..#FASHION.

If you’ve read our recent post on the fashion at Modernism Week, you’ll realize that it’s sort of a big deal. From the parties to the fashion shows, bouffants and glittery gowns are a must. We know that many of you have an amazing collection of vintage pieces in your closet, or perhaps some vintage fashion magazines stashed in the attic. Shoot them all and post them to Instagram – we want to see your fashion inspired photos!

Our special guest judge for this challenge is Brenna Egan from Refinery 29 – a personal style and feel-good online magazine engaging women and sharing with them content, commerce, and community while giving them all the tips, tricks, and tools they need to live a more beautiful life.

“In our cyclical fashion world, if there’s one aesthetic era that designers and stylists reference most, it’s hands-down the Mid-Century. Courrèges, Quant, Twiggy, Edie — what symbolizes freewheeling fun and rebellion more? That kind of revolutionary edge-turned-timeless vibe is something that I don’t believe can ever be replicated. Fashion was always meant to be an art form, and these decades were the first time whimsy worked its way into mainstream with moxie. For that, all I can say, is that I wholeheartedly wish I could have been alive to experience (and wear) it all,” says Egan.

Scroll down for contest rules…

Our judge, Brenna Egan from Refinery 29
