Palm Springs Modernism Week Celebrates Huge Turn Out for 2013

PS-Modernism-Slider

The 11-day celebration of midcentury architecture, design, and culture drew record crowds this year, attracting more than 40,000 visitors to the Coachella Valley.  As the only such event in the country when it was launched in 2006, Palm Springs Modernism Week has helped fuel a robust national interest in the preservation and appreciation of modernism, and has grown quickly over the years, with estimated attendance reaching 35,000 last year. Video: Moby on Modernism

We had a full house yesterday at The ACE Hotel to see Grammy-nominated musician Moby wax poetic on LA architecture, minimalism, Lautner and much more.  The conversation covered everything from John Pawson to Zaha Hadid, madly unlivable minimalism, and a bit of personal history on how the artist came to be such a fan of architecture.  Dubbed LA architecture’s newest mascot by the LA Weekly, the populist Moby effect is quite clear.  As he said himself, everyone should feel entitled to have a point of view on architecture.  When architecture is made exclusively for architects and academians, it ceases to be relevant.

If you missed the event, the Desert Sun filmed the event.  Watch it here now.

“To you, it’s the world. To us, it’s home.”

For former Pan Am flight attendants like actor Phillip Keene (The Closer, Major Crimes), the collapse of the international airline was a sudden and devastating loss.

“It was December 4, 1991,” Keene recalls. “I woke up that morning and learned that I didn’t have a job anymore.” Continue reading

Erin Feher

Not everyone agrees on the meaning of the word “modernism.” For some, it’s a strict adherence to the design style of the 1950s and ’60s. For others, it’s a philosophy that can be applied to pieces and places both old and new—an aesthetic that continues to evolve and push the boundaries of what came before.  Continue reading
