“To you, it’s the world. To us, it’s home.”

For former Pan Am flight attendants like actor Phillip Keene (The Closer, Major Crimes), the collapse of the international airline was a sudden and devastating loss.

“It was December 4, 1991,” Keene recalls. “I woke up that morning and learned that I didn’t have a job anymore.” Continue reading

Erin Feher

Not everyone agrees on the meaning of the word “modernism.” For some, it’s a strict adherence to the design style of the 1950s and ’60s. For others, it’s a philosophy that can be applied to pieces and places both old and new—an aesthetic that continues to evolve and push the boundaries of what came before.  Continue reading

#MODERNISMPROJECT > CHALLENGE NO. 6 > FASHION > SPECIAL GUEST JUDGE BRENNA EGAN | REFINERY 29

With Palm Springs Modernism Week commencing in a little over three weeks, here’s your last chance to win tickets! Our prize this week is a pair of tickets to the Silver Factory Gala on February 15th (a value of $250). Come and celebrate Andy Warhol’s notorious studio, where decadence and impropriety reigned supreme. For those of you who are new around here, the #ModernismProject is our first-ever mobile initiative encouraging the global community of modernism fans to express visually what modernism means to them. This week’s theme is…..#FASHION.

If you’ve read our recent post on the fashion at Modernism Week, you’ll realize that it’s sort of a big deal. From the parties to the fashion shows, bouffants and glittery gowns are a must. We know that many of you have an amazing collection of vintage pieces in your closet, or perhaps some vintage fashion magazines stashed in the attic. Shoot them all and post them to Instagram – we want to see your fashion inspired photos!

Our special guest judge for this challenge is Brenna Egan from Refinery 29 – a personal style and feel-good online magazine engaging women and sharing with them content, commerce, and community while giving them all the tips, tricks, and tools they need to live a more beautiful life.

“In our cyclical fashion world, if there’s one aesthetic era that designers and stylists reference most, it’s hands-down the Mid-Century. Courrèges, Quant, Twiggy, Edie — what symbolizes freewheeling fun and rebellion more? That kind of revolutionary edge-turned-timeless vibe is something that I don’t believe can ever be replicated. Fashion was always meant to be an art form, and these decades were the first time whimsy worked its way into mainstream with moxie. For that, all I can say, is that I wholeheartedly wish I could have been alive to experience (and wear) it all,” says Egan.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our latest #ModernismProject photo challenge –#typography. It was a pleasure to have Bobby Solomon with The Fox Is Black look through all of your submissions, so thank you for being our special guest judge! Bobby chose Debbie Piepenburg’s photo (@honeyburbon) of the Hollywood Downtowner Motel. As a Hollywood resident, Debbie’s obsessed with the old signs that line the streets of her neighborhood. She loves how fresh and alive they appear to be with their neon lights twinkling throughout the day. She loves how the light combinations constantly change and give passerby’s a glimpse into the past and the future all at once.

Follow Debbie on Instagram (@honeyburbon) to see more of her inspirations as she snaps photos of her neighborhood, her travels, and her favorite cats.

Check back next Thursday, January 24th when we announce our LAST #ModernismProject challenge – and your last chance to win tickets to Palm Springs Modernism Week!

#MODERNISMPROJECT > CHALLENGE NO. 5 > TYPOGRAPHY > SPECIAL GUEST JUDGE BOBBY SOLOMON

ModernismProject_Typography

Happy New Year everyone! We took some time away from the #ModernsimProject to enjoy the holidays, and we’re back with two more challenges (and two more chances to win tickets!) before Palm Springs Modernism Week in February. This week’s theme is…..#TYPOGRAPHY.

Go forth and capture images of vintage signs and ephemera that inspire modernism. Anything from roadsigns and posters to cereal boxes and soda cans. Typography is everywhere, so we want to see it in your community!

Our special guest judge for this challenge is Bobby Solomon, Editor-In-Chief of The Fox Is Black – a blog that focuses on design, architecture, music and culture. The Fox Is Black was started in 2007 as a way of sharing interesting ideas with likeminded people. Solomon currently lives in Los Angeles where he works as an art director at Disney Interactive.

Solomon believes that, “typography, both for digital use or hand-lettered, are thriving industries which have seen huge amounts of growth over the last 10 years. Though these styles are very different, the two are so critical to our world these days. Artists with the ability to paint beautiful signs on the glass of a storefront are equally important as a designer creating legible typefaces that make our reading experiences better.”

And we wholeheartedly agree!
