The 11-day celebration of midcentury architecture, design, and culture drew record crowds this year, attracting more than 40,000 visitors to the Coachella Valley. As the only such event in the country when it was launched in 2006, Palm Springs Modernism Week has helped fuel a robust national interest in the preservation and appreciation of modernism, and has grown quickly over the years, with estimated attendance reaching 35,000 last year. We had a full house yesterday at The ACE Hotel to see Grammy-nominated musician Moby wax poetic on LA architecture, minimalism, Lautner and much more. The conversation covered everything from John Pawson to Zaha Hadid, madly unlivable minimalism, and a bit of personal history on how the artist came to be such a fan of architecture. Dubbed LA architecture’s newest mascot by the LA Weekly, the populist Moby effect is quite clear. As he said himself, everyone should feel entitled to have a point of view on architecture. When architecture is made exclusively for architects and academians, it ceases to be relevant.
If you missed the event, the Desert Sun filmed the event. Watch it here now.

Rolling into Palm Springs on Friday? Not sure what to do. Head over to the Uptown Design District for their monthly evening event: eat, shop, drink. District shops and galleries will open their doors, offering visitors bites and sips. It’s your chance to check out the latest products, do a bit of shopping, and nosh all at the same time. There is rumor that there is a “passport” program. Visitors who get their passport stamped at each establishment can win a prize at the end of the evening. But this is not confirmed. Either way, it’s free, fun, and festive. For full list of Design District shops, check this out.
Get ready for the closing weekend of Palm Springs Modernism Week 2013! As an added treat this weekend, dozens of vintage trailers will be temporarily taking up residence on the Hilton Hotel Parking Lot embodying and reviving that most classic of American past-times – traveling the open road – when the Vintage Trailer Show returns to Palm Springs. To simplify things for our visitors, Modernism Week is offering a special weekend pass for the first time-ever. Visitors are invited to buy a special weekend pass at the door for $20 on Saturday, Feb. 23rd and Sunday, Feb. 24th. This pass gets them into the Vintage Trailer Show, the Prefab Showcase, and the Modern Living Expo. Who loves ya?
